What it’s like

Founded in 1876, it is situated in Headingley, 2–3 miles from Leeds city centre and within walking distance of the university. It has elegant and well-equipped buildings in 10 acres of pleasant grounds with lawns and gardens. The pre-prep school is on the same site; the junior school is a 3 minutes’ walk away and has recently had a major new extension. There is considerable collaboration with Leeds Grammar School and in 2007 the two are to merge forming a single co-educational school, the Grammar School at Leeds. Academic standards are high and results excellent. There is a strong system of pastoral support and a personal and social education programme. The school’s industrial liaison officer fosters links with local businesses, runs courses and conferences and arranges work experience/shadowing. Music and drama are strong and there are excellent facilities for work in these subjects, including separate music and drama centre and drama studio and new facilities in the junior school. There is also a modern sports complex with indoor swimming pool on site. A range of extra-curricular activities (including Young Enterprise groups, community-service scheme, theatre visits, a school magazine and termly newsletter) develops pupils’ awareness beyond the classroom.
